about

Huck Finn is a 40-foot Chateau Vee by Crusier's Inc., now known as Cruiser's Yachts. The boat was built in 1986. Huck Finn's home port is Fairport, NY on the Erie Canal.

Huckleberry Finn is also the name of my flat-coated retriever. He also answers to "Huck," "Huckster," "Huckles," or "Hey" and "Buddy" also "Doofus!" and sometimes "Dammit!" So my dog and boat have pretty much the same name. Yes, it can be confusing.

Anyway, here's Huck sitting on my first boat, Sweet Jane. I built her myself in my garage, with the much-needed help of my wife and three kids. If I had a bigger garage, and a bigger family, I could have built a bigger boat. But, like my friend Dick says: "He spent 10 years building a boat. He coulda just bought one and spent 10 years cruising!" Hard to argue with logic.

So, this time, when I wanted a bigger boat, I pulled out my checkbook. And that's why I drink.

When I'm not drinking, I'm a dockmaster in Fairport. --2017

Okay, a lot has changed in the last couple of years. I'm also bridgemaster, and lockmaster, and I'm one of the Captains of the Colonial Belle. So, yeah. Huck is doing fine by the way. The dog I mean. The boat is okay too. --2020
